Every time I go to Trader Joe’s or Target to get snacks for the waiting room at my office (yes, I have food for my people), I feel like I need to explain myself.
Like I need to tell someone what is going on when this is ALL that’s in my basket.
No milk.
No carrots.
Just the snacks.
Other times I’m waiting for the check-out person to ask, to make a comment, make light of it.
I have this whole thing ready in my head.
Just in case.
In case they do ask.
‘Cause – you know – You never know.
I usually buy things in 3s.
Don’t ask me why.
I put them out in threes, too.
So I wonder what people think.
What they make of it when they see me coming through with nothing but THAT in my basket.
Maybe she has 3 kiddos and is getting snacks for school, thinking ahead (HA!), getting the next month’s worth.
There have been times when I’ve gotten dangerously close to just talking on my own, starting the conversation, without anyone even asking.
Like today.
“Oh, don’t worry – it wasn’t THAT kind of day.
I run my own business and I just like to get snacks for the office – for my clients.”
I even imagine them saying – “Oh, your clients are lucky ducks… – who do you work with?”
Such lovely checkout staff.
(This isn’t a dig against anyone, they truly are. Particularly at TJ’s.)
“I work with couples, helping them get along better together.
I teach them all the things that nobody’s ever taught any of us before we get married, you know?
Some days, they come in not having eaten anything all day, so I like having some tasty options available for when that happens.”
Don’t worry, I kept it together.
Didn’t say a word.
But I got it down.
For next time.
PS: They said – Get to know your Marriage Person.
Well, here you have it 🙂
Now you know.
