“It’s not like we didn’t know.
When we first met, that was part of what made it so exciting.
We’d even brag about it to our family and friends, not even kidding.
He grew up on one continent.
I grew up on another.
It didn’t seem like that big of a deal then.
We were even proud of it.
Embraced it, fully.
And whatever the complications were that came up, we made it work.
We would jump at the opportunity to grow, to learn something about the other and then bring that piece of tradition or culture into our little family’s life.
Creating our own little nest.
Our own rules.
But that’s then.”
“Now, twelve years later, it’s getting in our way.
More than we’d like.
We are unable to make decisions together.
Parenting is painful most days – he thinks there is one way to do it ‘right’.
So do I.
What I used to love now drives me crazy.
I don’t get it.
Some of his expectations make no sense to me.
We don’t seem to agree on anything anymore.
What he used to adore about me seems to be creating a rift between us that leaves us spending Friday nights each with our own friends, instead of going out together and laughing so much we cried.
Or worse yet – each staring into our own screen, waiting for bedtime that’s not coming fast enough.
The worst part?
We don’t seem to be able to talk about any of it without going into silence-mode for days after.”
