This is a letter from me to you, with love.
There’s no denying it.
The numbers don’t lie.
Picture this:
It’s Friday night & you are at a dinner party.
Six couples total present.
Hear this.
Every other couple in the room will end up in divorce.
Every other couple around the table – Let that sink in.
For dramatic effect – you could could count yourselves off.
One, Two, One, Two, One, Two.
We have proof, the stats are still communicating this to us.
We’re at 50%.
Look it up on the internet.
It doesn’t take very long to dig up.
Now, my question for you is this.
What are YOU two doing to make sure that you don’t end up being one of those three?
What are you doing today, what are you doing this week, this month to make sure that that doesn’t end up being your trajectory?
That that’s not your family’s reality?
And don’t fool yourselves.
I can hear it already – Some of you are already arguing with me in your head (even if you won’t say it out loud) – oh, we’re not going to be THAT couple.
That’s NOT the kind of group that we are in.
And all this reasoning comes in, where, in one way or another, you think you two are immune (STILL!).
Or, your group is.
— Oh, we are both super smart, super educated – we wouldn’t let that happen.
— Our dinner party is full of people that go to church every week.
— Oh, don’t worry, we waited until we were grown up and mature before we got married (unlike those young and immature couples we know).
— Nah, I have a degree in this (as in, MFT).
— Oh, that won’t be us – we MET at Seminary.
— No, we did do our premarital counseling before saying ‘yes’.
— Oh, we went to retreat ten years ago.
— Oh, we have so much in common – we’re not like other couples.
Need I continue?
Whichever one of these is coming up for YOU – Know this.
There’s no such thing as IMMUNE.
