Nobody Cleans During A Tornado

nobody cleans during a tornado

Nobody cleans during a tornado.

You don’t either.

Of course you DON’T.

Nobody does.

What’s this talk of tornadoes, you ask — Let me explain.

Why Nobody Cleans During a Tornado

YOU CANNOT clean during a tornado.

We all know this, right?

You are collecting all the humans (and pets) you love and making sure they are safe.

That’s what you do during a tornado.

Nobody is standing at the door, pointing to the dishes or the carpet that needs vacuuming, saying – oh, I better do this quick.

Nobody pulls out the paint swatches (or whatever those things are called at Lowes or Home Depot) and puts them up all over the house, saying to their spouse – OH, THIS ONE. THIS GREEN IS PERFECT.

As the windows start shaking, and you hear the alarms going off – nobody in their right mind is walking around, pointing, saying – oh, we should get a different lamp for this corner right here.

That’s just NOT what you do during a tornado.

You leave all the rest of the things behind – set them aside for the time being – and you deal with the only thing that matters.

How do I protect the people I love and ensure that they are safe.

That’s it.

NOW —

I don’t know what YOUR TORNADO is right now.

What a Tornado Looks Like FOR YOU

Maybe it’s that you lost your job.

And on top of that, your kids changed schools and aren’t still super happy (or adjusted) to that change.

Maybe it’s that you lost a parent.

Or a grandparent.

If not that, maybe it was both within weeks of each other.

Maybe you are mourning a friend.

One that, even though both of you are alive, the friendship is no longer.

Or maybe it’s that you moved.

Across the country, or to the other side of the city.

Doesn’t matter.

Maybe your baby is getting five teeth at once and no one in the household has slept for two weeks straight.

Here’s the thing — Maybe it’s two or three or FIVE of the things I mentioned above, all happening at the same time.

Maybe that’s your tornado – That’s when *I* call it a tornado.

When multiple of those things are happening at the same time.

IF YOU ARE IN THE MIDDLE OF A TORNADO —

Here’s what I want you to hear me say.

Of course you aren’t cleaning.

Naturally, you aren’t picking colors for your walls or coming up with new ideas for a remodel.

Of course you aren’t worrying about the potty training right now.

You aren’t, clearly, dealing with that snafu with your husband from last night or two weeks ago –

When what you two are doing is simply trying to survive and come up for air.

So please, PLEASE, don’t do that to yourselves.

Don’t add ‘beating ourselves up for not caring for our marriage’ to your list while all of those things were happening.

Tornado, remember?

It’s real.

“We didn’t deal with all the things when they were happening.”

Of course you didn’t.

You’re here now.

And we’ll start the cleanup together.

I’m happy to help.

Now –

If yours isn’t a full-blown tornado as you read this – and is more a breeze or a hint of moving air – and you’d like to get some things straightened out in your marriage –

Some things put away, or cleaned up –

Welcome.

Come on right in.

There’s room for you, too.
