Why Cross-Cultural Marriages Feel So Hard (SOMETIMES) – Having Earnest Marriage Conversations with Your Spouse

Okay, I’m not feeling cute today—I’m not definitely NOT sounding cute.

My kids tell me that I sound like a dying zebra… How would they even know that?

BUT I need to talk to you about something important.

If you’ve been married 12, 15, or even 20 years—and you’re in a multi-cultural marriage—have you noticed how some conversations just… hit differently?

I’m talking about the ones where your upbringing clashes with theirs, or where words that seem ‘normal’ to you feel like landmines to them. Or the other way around.

Like, maybe you’re trying to make a point about how you handled things growing up, and your partner says, ‘What? Who does that? We NEVER did that growing up.’

Sound familiar?

Here’s the thing—when two cultures meet under one roof, so do two sets of expectations, two sets of realities.

The challenge then is, how do you communicate without feeling like you’re on opposite teams?

I’ve got a simple framework that can help cross-cultural couples navigate these tricky conversations and feel more connected as a result, even when you don’t agree.

I’ll share it with you in the next video—hopefully with less ‘frog in my voice.

Alright, I’m going to drink some more tea and take care of this scratchy voice of mine—but you think about this because your marriage can, in fact, be stronger when you can welcome those unique pieces of each one of you.

More On Earnest Marriage Conversations: Change YOUR Marriage Story

All right, it’s the 21st of January.

What have you been putting off for the last 21 days that you’ve been meaning to start this year?

You know what?

The good news is, it doesn’t matter.

You can start any day.

I heard somebody say the other day, “You know when a good time to start a diet is? Midway through a bag of chips.”

You can literally start and decide, “I am going to stop eating this kind of food,” or “I’m going to stop doing certain things,” like midway through the activity.

You’re just halfway through the fight with your spouse, and you can decide, “We’re going to be done. I’m not participating in this anymore. I’m not doing it. You’re not doing it. We’re not going to keep perpetuating the same cycle for days on end.”

Because it matters too much.

I don’t want to put our family through this.

I don’t want to put you through this.

You are too important.

Let’s change the way that the story ends.

Use Chat GPT in MARRIAGE

Are you and your spouse feeling overwhelmed, like so many others, with all the things that you two have to juggle?

All the demands on your life?

There’s been so much talk about AI and ChatGPT.

Here’s how you can use it for your benefit in your marriage.

I call it “ChatGPT for the win.”

For all the things that it cannot do for us and on our behalf, here are three ways that make your life easier.

Number one: meal planning.

Did you know this? If you’re struggling with what to cook or what to eat, you can ask ChatGPT for a week meal plan that fits your budget.

You tell it how many people, dietary preferences, and it can even write a complete grocery store list for you.

So, there’s one.

Number two: shared to-do lists.

If you ever find yourselves needing help in the organizing chores department, ChatGPT can come to the rescue.

It will help comprise and divide all the daily and weekly tasks fairly between the two of you.

You can even create a cleaning schedule that works for your family and include your kids if they’re old enough.

It can help with all of that.

Number three: Date Night Ideas

If you’re ever stuck in a rut, as they say, did you know that you can tell ChatGPT how much you want to spend, your location, or the location where you would want to go if it’s a different city from where you live?

Add your interests, and it will give you fresh, fun date night ideas to keep the spark alive.

Oh, and if you’re looking for more of that, I also have an array of fun date night ideas ready on my website.

I’ll put the link in the description below.

Here’s a bonus point: you can also use ChatGPT to write quick little sweet messages and surprise your honey with them during the day.

So off you go!

Try it out tonight, come back, and tell me how it goes.

If this has been helpful, would you please hit the like button?

They tell me the algorithm likes it.

Crate More Opportunities for Earnest Marriage Conversations: What Happened When AI Planned DATE NIGHT

Yesterday, I showed you three different ways that you can use ChatGPT to simplify your marriage when you are running out of ideas.

One of those things was getting date night ideas in the city that you live in.

So, I wanted to show you what this looks like and what it actually can do.

I put in the prompt: where we live, what we like to do (my husband and I), and how much we wanted to spend.

I just picked a random number.

So, if you think you can’t have an amazing date night in Minneapolis for just 50 bucks, think again!

Here are three creative ideas for a foodie, artsy, music-loving couple like the two of us:

Number one: We’re supposed to head to Midtown Global Market, split some delicious dishes from around the world, and catch one of the live performances.

Many of them are free and super affordable.

Never knew about the music, but I’ve been to eat there.

Number two: Theater on a budget.

Check out half-price rush tickets for local theaters like the Guthrie (we’ve been there) or Mixed Blood.

You can often grab seats for under $25 each.

Never knew that either.

Number three: Free art and dessert crawl.

Start at the MIA (the Minneapolis Institute of Art), which is free.

I knew that, but then you can take the $50 and explore Milk Jam Creamery or Patisserie 46.

Never heard of either one of them, so I’m excited to try them out.

Which one of these things would you try first if it was the two of you?

Try it in your own city.

Let me know what it comes up with and how the date goes!
