Why I Don’t Do Square Gift Cards

why i don't do gift cards

Why I don’t do Square gift cards in my business?

Certainly not for lack of inquiries.

I have had so many couples over the years, older couples with older kids, ask me about this.

Lately, it’s even been the other way around.

Younger couples asking on their parents’ behalf.

(How cool is that, right?)

Wondering if they could purchase a package – premarital or otherwise – of counseling sessions with me for their adult children.

These are adult children who were/are in a serious relationship or already married a handful of years.

Knowing that they were struggling with a thing or two – they did what any parent wants to do for their child.

Offer them help.

Find them help.

Make sure that their suffering doesn’t go longer than absolutely necessary.

But they always  find themselves ill-equipped to do so.

So they’d ask me.

“We’d cover the cost, of course.”

Would that be possible?

Could we do that?

DO you do that?”

They end up always surprised at the immediate ‘no’ on my part.

Once I told them why – it made perfect sense.

Why it IS a NO

Have you ever stopped someone at the airport, with a tattoo all the way on their arm, and offered to remove it?

They would look at you like you were crazy.

They might even say:

“What? This thing? I love this thing. Are you kidding? That’s not going anywhere.”

Or, they would just give you a puzzled look, assume you must be confused, and keep walking.

Assume that you have mistaken them for someone else.

Now, picture this.

The person that walks into a tattoo parlor and says –

“I did this thing.

Twenty years ago when I was young and stupid and belonged to this band – we all did this.

Together.

But it’s gotta go.

Can you help me?

Can you tell me about someone who can?

To remove it?”

Totally different story. Right?

In a similar fashion –

Have you ever tried talking someone into losing some weight with you that sees it as absolutely no problem that they are twenty or thirty pounds overweight?

And then picture the woman that walks into the doctor’s office (the gym, the coffee shop to meet with a personal trainer) and says –

“This has got to go.

I’ve ignored it long enough.”

Or the person that will walk up to you, seeing your results of shedding 20, 30, 40 pounds – being amazed and asking –

“How did you do it?

Can you please tell me?

I need help and I need it now.”

Totally different story.

Do you see it?

Totally different outcome.

The second person is going to be all in, will ask all the questions, will do all the work, they’re sold – because they have made up their mind that this is a thing and they want to change it.

You, as their friend don’t have to do that work for them.

You buying someone a gift card to work with me is like talking to the stranger at the airport about their tattoo removal.

It makes no sense.

So I don’t do it.

And neither should you.
